Gate Is Fixed

As you've probably noticed, our gates are up and running. One of the motors had tripped, but the main problem was actually due to the way the control box was programmed. There were so many on/off times programmed that they seemed to be overlapping with each other. The time wasn't even close to being correct, which was probably due to power outages and/or trips.

The gate is now closed 24 hours a day. Chris didn't make any changes to the codes, so for now all of the codes that start with "key-key" will still work. (Note: the phone line is still shut off, so we still can't dial to the houses.) Remotes still work as well. If you have a remote that needs programming, email grandfirs@hotmail.com and I'll put you in touch with Chris.

Eventually, Chris would like to wipe off all the unnecessary codes and start fresh. But for now, we'll just stick with the ones already programmed until we can figure out how the best way to go about making the transition.

One last note: There is a way to program the gate to have just one arm open at a time (depending on whether a vehicle is entering or exiting). We're thinking this would be a good idea to help prolong the life of the gate. No sense in having both arms opening every time a car enters or exits.

I would like to personally thank Chris for fixing our gate...now that they will be closed, we can definitely count on less riff-raff coming in, and I already feel alittle safer. Thanks to all whp put time in over this weekend to help in getting things fixed up there!

Again, thank you so much...it is so nice to have a remote that works now!!!! Ours had never worked since we moved here, it was so nice of you to offer to fix it.

Also, I too feel safer now that the gate is closed - it's just as it should be (and just as what we wanted when we bought in GF) I think the one arm at a time opening would be great.

Thanks to all and especially Chris! It is so nice to live in a neighborhood where people are willing to sacrafice time and energy for the common good. Sundays are hard or us to get out to help, but let us know if a Saturday work party is in order!

Just a quick question. With the gates closed all the time how do things like mail, UPS, milk, etc. get delivered? I have never lived in gated community before, so I am not sure how it works. :)

Crystal, thanks for the question! When the box was initially programmed, codes were created for the utility companies and businesses such as UPS, USPS, etc. Chris happened to run into a UPS driver yesterday, so he had a chance to ask "were you ever given a code?" (Answer was yes, and the driver had it written in his book.)

As for the milk, I'm not sure if the driver was given a code. I will email him and check.

I was wondering the same thing about delivery services. I am waiting on a delivery and was concerned about them not being able to get in or reach us due to it being closed 24/7 and the phone out there not working. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm SO excited that the gate has been fixed! It's amazing the sense of security it brings! I realize if someone wants in, they'll get in, hopefully with a bit more work than just driving on in!!! Glad things might actually be taking a turn for the good in here!

Also, my opinion is to NOT be giving out a ton of gate codes! The people that live and belong in here have remotes or other openers. I'd rather not every Tom, Dick and Harry have access.

I called FedEx yesterday. They don't have the ability to distribute a code to all their drivers but had the following suggestions:

1. When you place an order online or on the phone and have the option of leaving shipping instructions, type in the gate code or your phone number. It will be printed on the label for the driver to see.

2. If you don't have the option to leave shipping instructions, call FedEx as soon as you have your tracking number, provide the gate code, and they will add a note for the driver.

I have a friend whose husband works for FedEx and he said that once he's given a gate code, he will write it in his personal notebook to use in the future. Gates are becoming more and more common these days and drivers are used to them.
