I agree!! We have a dog that now wears a bark collar when we're not at home. This has been being done since one of our "friendly" neighbors complained to the Pierce County Auditor's Animal Control office about a barking dog. My husband works from home & I only work 3 days a week, if that. We're a bit confused why someone wouldn't have come to our door if they felt our dog barked too much. There are a couple of other dogs in the neighborhood that are far more noisy than ours so I'm quite offended that we have been targeted. We do what we can to keep our dog quiet. I realize some people may want to live in a perfectly quiet neighborhood, but dogs just bark. It's what they do. With all of the strangers & wild life roaming around out here, dogs are going to bark. As I said earlier, Chloe now wears a bark collar that shocks her each time she barks. I know she's no longer the neighborhood problem if she ever really was.
Let's see if we can all try to be a bit more neighborly. If you have a problem or concern, let's try to handle it nicely instead of sneaking around and going behind everyone's back.
I agree, Paige. I also think that going and talking to a neighbor face to face about thier barking dog would be way more affective then HOPING someone reads a blog post, and maybe assumes it's thier dog thats the nuissance. Thats probably not going to happen, so if you want to see results, take it to the source, that way there is no confusion. My dog wears a bark collar as well, and he is an indoor dog that is occasionally outside when we have to leave the house. I didnt have anyone complain(to my face anyway, lol)about his barking, but I just didnt want it to ever get to that point. Bottom line is, dogs are going to bark. We are in a neighborhood with alot of daily activity...and its just gonna happen sometimes. I find, that if you want something resolved, don't "beat around the bush" about it...take it to the source! We should all be able and comfortable enough with one another, that we can have discussions like grown-ups.
It's interesting that it was your dog that was named the culprit, Paige. I walked down your street the other day, and there are MULTIPLE barking dogs all around you. Its hard to keep dogs from barking when there are that many all in the same vicinity. You get one going...then its just a chain reaction. I think the fact that your dog is in bark collar just shows how much respect you have for the people around you...especially when, bark collars are just crappy. Maybe if all your surrounding neighbors put one on all thier dogs...thier wouldn't be anymore complaining? Wishful thinking...
Sure wish I knew who this anonymous person was so I could gather some information. What time of day was it, who was barking, were you walking an animal, etc.? We've been fortunate that Chloe doesn't just bark because other dogs are barking. She also doesn't just bark because our neighbors are in their backyard. The wolves don't even bother her. She barks at people prowling around our back fence, cats on our fence or in our yard & a horse in a pasture she sees in the distance. She definitely doesn't just bark to bark.
I agree that dogs are going to bark. It is what they do and honestly it is what they are supposed to do when guarding their family and property. I also think their is a difference between barking occasionally at something it someone and nuisance barking, which is constant and triggered usually by lonliness or boredom.
We all need to be a little tolerant, and communicate with our neighbors if there is a real problem. Dogs will bark and children will shout. Part of being in a family neighborhood right.? Our dogs wear bark collars too ever since our neighbors nicely mentioned that they barked a bit when we were at work during the day.
Rockbean makes a good point. I admit, my dogs are occasional barkers (usually triggered by kids playing in the empty lot next door or another dog). When our dogs bark, we immediately correct them.
If a dog is barking all day long but the owner is away, it's only fair to notify the owner directly, or leave a kind note on the door. They may have absolutely no clue their dog barks while they are gone.
